The Big Brother dahlia is a large “dinnerplate” type dahlia known for its enormous, showy blooms. It is grown mainly for its striking flower size and warm, sunset-like coloring. Big Brother produces very large, fully double flowers typically around 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) across, which is why it is classed as a dinnerplate dahlia. The blooms are ruffled and somewhat tousled, giving them a soft, full, almost fluffy look rather than a stiff formal shape.  The petals usually blend warm tones of golden yellow, caramel, orange, and peach, often with a bronzy or tawny cast depending on light and maturity of the bloom. This multitone effect can make each flower look slightly different, with some flowers appearing more yellow and others more orange or peach.

The plant itself is a tall, tuberous perennial dahlia, typically reaching around 3–4 feet or more, with strong stems that hold the heavy blooms above the foliage. Big Brother is popular both in borders and as a cut flower, where its huge, warm-toned blooms stand out in arrangements and wedding work.
