Piilu is a compact, very free-flowering, early large-flowered clematis, especially good for small gardens and containers. It is known for producing two different flower forms over the season and for blooming heavily from top to bottom of the plant. In late spring, Piilu typically produces double or semi-double blooms about 3–4 inches across, followed later in summer by single flowers on new growth. The petals are soft mauve‑pink with a deeper rose bar down the center, slightly ruffled edges, and a contrasting boss of creamy to pale yellow anthers, giving a full, plush look on the first flush and a simpler starry look on the second. Piilu blooms very heavily, often so much that the flowers nearly cover the foliage, and in cooler climates it can flower almost continuously from late spring into early fall. It is classed as an early large‑flowered clematis, with the first flush on old wood and a second on new wood, which is why it is often placed in pruning group 2.
