Eucomis bicolor, commonly called the variegated pineapple lily or just pineapple lily, is a striking summer‑growing bulbous perennial in the Asparagaceae family, native to southern Africa (especially the Drakensberg mountains in KwaZulu‑Natal, Lesotho, and the Free State). It grows about 1–2 ft tall, forming a basal rosette of large, fleshy, strap‑like leaves that are often wavy‑edged and may be purple‑spotted or purple‑margined. A stout, often purple‑speckled or purple‑streaked flower stem emerges in late summer, topped by a dense cylindrical raceme of star‑shaped flowers that closely resemble a small pineapple. The individual flowers are creamy‑white or pale green with prominent purple margins or streaks, giving rise to the name bicolor (“two‑colored”), and the inflorescence is crowned by a tuft of green, leaf‑like bracts, sometimes tinged with purple. It is an easy-to-produce specialty cut flower. Harvest when a quarter of the florets are half-open. Grow in full sun for vibrant color. Exceptional vase life (up to 20+ days). Foliage of colored varieties is also harvestable.
